What you need to know before your trail

A family vanishes from their home on an idyllic island off the Swedish coast. They have left everything behind – including their one-year-old daughter, Ebba.

Now, years later, Ebba has returned to the island. She and her husband have suffered the loss of their only child and are looking to make a fresh start. But within days, their house is the target of an arson attack.

Detective Patrik Hedstrom and crime writer Erica Falck are fascinated with the story and start to strip away the layers of what did just happen to the family who seemingly vanished all those years ago?

Travel Guide

Although still one of the Fjällbacka murder mysteries from Camilla, this is a different setting as most of the action takes place on Valö, a holiday island across the bay.

The island is the setting for the old house which a couple who have lost their child are busy renovating. An old house with creaky floorboards is bound to have secrets and this one is no exception. The house starts to reveal these secrets and the couple, Tobias and Ebba are soon regretting their being there.

“They had decided to renovate their way out of the grief. Neither of them was sure it was a good plan, but it was the only one they had.”

This house has already been the scene of one major crime but no evidence was ever found that something bad had taken place there. But the house and the island take on an eerie turn as through flashbacks the house comes alive and the ghosts of people start to reappear telling their story.

There are also a few historical back notes to the story as Camilla herself explains that the story of the Bohuslän granite and the visit to the island of one particular historical figure inspired the story. There is no Angelmaker in real life but there are real life similarities between Helga in the novel and Hilda Nilsson from Helsingborg who died in 1917 (no spoilers here)

The summer camp on the island of Valö, does exist and as Camilla says, almost everyone in Fjällbacka has some kind of relationship with the big white house there.
