Books set in magical places
Books set in circuses, theatres and toyshops
All books take readers to magical places. I’m talking places where your imagination runs riot more than usual. I’ve read a few books that really stick in my mind for the weird and wonderful places they take me too. From a BookTrail perspective, some of these places are so magical that they have to remain fictional and you can’t actually go there in real life. However, with a little bit of imagination, you can….
There be funambulists, somnambulists and magicians galore in the world you are about to enter…
CIRCUS
The Girl Made of Air Nydia Hetherington
The first book I want to tell you about is actually one of those #3rdSeptembers – it’s got a gorgeous cover, a spellbinding plot and a world you will want to immerse yourself in:
MUSIC HALL
The Somnambulist by Essie Fox
Then comes the novel where there’s talk of a Somnambulist and you get to stand on the stage of the Wilton Hall Music and smell the greasepaint and feel the lights on your face.
WHERE FAIRIES LIVE
The Cottingly Secret by Hazel Gaynor
This was inspired by the true life tale of two young girls who said they had seen real fairies, They even managed to produce photos of them on the cameras of the day. Everyone believed them and photographic experts couldn’t explain how they’d done it. Could it really be true?
A TOY EMPORIUM
The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale
How I wish THIS toyshop was real. This is one of those books I remember with such fondness as it was and is so unique and special. Toys that come alive, magic which takes over the toyshop and perhaps most important of all as far as I am concerned: Wendy Houses that appear so much bigger inside than out. (This was a childhood dream of mine – I expected it to be like Dr Who’s Tardis)
CIRCUS
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Back to the Circus – well you have to when it’s the Night Circus. Never has there been quite such a magical place as this created in a novel. One that could be real, that feels real, and which might in fact be real – if you see a black and white striped tent appear in a field somewhere….
