1943: A SOE agent escapes to Lisbon away from the Gestapo
LISBON, 1943: When her cover is blown, SOE agent Elisabeth de Mornay flees Paris. Pursued by the Gestapo, she makes her way to neutral Lisbon, where Europe’s elite rub shoulders with diplomats, businessmen, smugglers, and spies. There she receives new orders – and a new identity.
Posing as wealthy French widow Solange Verin, Elisabeth must infiltrate a German espionage ring targeting Allied ships, before more British servicemen are killed.
The closer Elisabeth comes to discovering the truth, the greater the risk grows. With a German officer watching her every step, it will take all of Elisabeth’s resourcefulness and determination to complete her mission.
Before we get to Lisbon, there’s a quick flit from Paris and a drive across France, passing through many villages which are never named apart from a few checkpoints such as Montauban.
We discover the city of Lisbon through the eyes of a spy. Elisabeth has to follow people without being detected and she takes us around the city’s streets via its shadows and dark corners.
Elisabeth manages to show us the glamorous hotels of Lisbon via her missions in and around the city. From there, we move to the beachfront bars of Estoril and finally the villas of the rich and famous. It’s here that those at the top of the German powers that be, hang out and observe. The rich and famous dazzle and blind those around them. This is a very gilded cage however, a trap, a false world. Elisabeth is the bait in this very dangerous pond.
