2000s: Somewhere in remote Northumberland, hidden secrets don’t stay that way for long.
Jennifer always dreamed of becoming an actress until one terrible accident left her scarred literarily and figuratively scarred. She hides herself away and her confidence is at rock bottom but always thinks of the life she could, should have had.
When Mack arrives in her home town, he sees past her scars and gets to like her. Gradually she starts to come out of her shell, but Mack hides a secret, a really hurtful secret that if Jennifer knew, could send her back to square one.
Mack is finding out a lot more about Jennifer that he likes, but then he knows he’s not really there in Northumberland to fall in love. He has something to do.
Set in Northumberland, from the very moment you descend from the taxi or which ever mode of transport you have taken here, there is humour and banter aplenty. This is the place where Jen has decided to hide out – shaken and scarred following her accident. Joining in with some of the local community activities, places such as Low Newton Beach give her a real sense of belonging, and a quiet place to be herself and to be alone when she needs to be.
Mack is an outsider, coming into this unique part of the world for a particular reason but finding quite another. His ‘fish out of water’ appearance and behaviour
Rural Northumberland is beautifully evoked in all of its colours – from the humour of the taxi driver to the local library and the farm where Jen lives. The inner workings of the local amateur dramatic society are something the author knows well. Cue, comedy, action and a whole lot of getting to know yourself in the process.
Be sure to visit Low Newton – Jenn’s favourite spot in all Northumberland and have a pint or a cuppa at the famous Swan Inn. Then walk on the beach – and savour this read.
