However, she’s not alone for long as she finds a bundle of letters hidden away in the ramshackle cottage. This novel transports you to River Tamar, Devon and Cornwall
This novel is told in various timelines: 1914 – 1921 and in the present day. A solider writes to his sweetheart from the battlefields of France. Imagine finding the letters and following their story across the years? Well, Theo in the present day story does and it’s wonderful to go along with her and meet them all in this story. Emotionally speaking, this is a story of loss but also of love. There are secrets to be revealed and it’s definitely a story that weaves its way around your heart, tugging as it goes.
It’s a fascinating story to go back in time to the war and find out how it was back then. How it was for women especially with no right to vote, a pressure to get married and act as society saw fit. The secrets of this time are preserved in those dusty letters and what a joy to uncover and explore the mysteries of these words in the present day. The kind of love you read about her never leaves you.

I loved the main character Theo’s strength and resilience. I felt as nosy as her as she started to explore the letters. It was fascinating to see her building a new life for herself in the Boatman’s Cottage. Oh that cottage! I so want to live there. It’s inspired by a real place but read the author note at the end after the novel itself.
My heart was in my mouth a lot of the time. There are some very sad and poignant moments in this novel. It made me shed a tear such is the beautty of the writing and the moving story within. All against a backdrop of the shimmering water of the Tamar representing the passing of time and the fleeting nature of life itself.
