Two stepsisters, Ellen and Lacey go out to Corfu in order to plan something along the lines of Lacey’s Big Fat Greek wedding. Lacey is to marry Mark and she wants the wedding of her dreams with all the trimmings. But the bride to be soon becomes the bridezilla and goes a little crazy whilst Ellen seems to lose interest and get distracted by the many distractions on the island, One of these is a rather tanned young man by the name of Yan. He might be from Bulgaria but he’s sending Ellen into a Greek frenzy – language difficulties, secrets from home and secrets just waiting to burst out. Lacy meanwhile getting overwrought with the wedding, is starting to have a few doubts.
Welcome to Corfu! Grab your cocktail, towel and copy of the novel and head down to the beach. You can imagine holidaying and indeed getting married on this wonderful island – sun, sea and sand as far as the eye can see. That’s if you’re not Ellen an manage to see past the tanned men who saunter past.
The setting of Corfu is as just as much a character as the sisters themselves. The hotel where the sisters stay for example is inspired by the Mareblue Beach Hotel in Agios Spyridon, Corfu, as Mandy tells us that she often holidays here. Where better to get inspiration for a beachy dose of holiday fun?
The island comes alive in fragrance, setting and tastes too – from the olives and the ouzo, to the ornate tiles and rustle of leaves in the Mediterranean breeze, to the glistening waters and the promises of what lies over the horizon, Mandy’s Corfu is definitely where you want to spend some time either fictionally or for real.
Clare @thebooktrailer:
This is ideal for a beach read but I tell you something – if you take it to a rainy wet weekend in a remote village in Scotland, it will have the effect of brightening your reading experience as well! It’s sun, sea and sand and a whole lot of comedy with some serious bits in there too – Ellen’s romance with Yan for example is fraught with problems but then that’s the fun of seeing what happens isn’t it?
I swear this book was so much fun and so realistic that although I couldn’t get my hands on an Apricot cooler, I did have to raid the fridge for an orange juice. I thought I saw sand spilling from the pages. That Mandy Baggot has a way of transporting you and getting you totally involved in what you are reading. Fun, uplifting and the cover is just like a picture postcard that you keep as a lovely memory to a lovely literary holiday.
