There is not much in the way of setting here but the place Balesford mentioned in the novel is fictional. There is a village called Bale and one called Ford in real life but they are in different areas.
There’s mention of the familiar Wetherspoons pubs and these are numerous throughout the country.
Grimms fairytales is regularly alluded to and forests and dark places are also everywhere and not just in your imagination.
