Jólabókaflóð: A BookTrailer’s Dream

Jólabókaflóð: A BookTrailer’s Dream – Christmas Eve is the day when you exchange a book with someone. You then spend the rest of the day or evening in bed reading the book and eating chocolate. There is one day for this I hear you cry.  Do bookworms not do this more than a few times a week. No,  just me then?

The tradition of Jólabókaflóð – the ‘ Book Flood’ comes from the fact that Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country, and sells most of them between September and November due to people preparing for the upcoming holiday.

So. Here’s what you need to do.

1 Give a book to someone you love

2 Give yourself at LEAST one book

3 Spend the day reading it with chocolates, crisps and snacks of all description. As for the person you have given the book to – they can  only stay in the room with you if they don’t talk. They have to read in silence and speak only to share bookish joy or knowledge, gasp at a character’s actions, laugh at a line of dialogue, gasp at a plot twist or cry tears at the end when they feel bereft at closing the final page.

4 Bookish hangovers will result but then Christmas Day is another chance to engage in Jólabókaflóð. As is Boxing Day. Little known fact – it’s called Boxing Day as that’s when you should place a few books in a box, coverered in book wrapping paper and proceed to read all of them. Or time to join a bookbox service? Start a book box set?

Wishing every reader a wonderfully bookish Christmas and an even more bookish New Year.
