2000s: Two sisters. Bound by blood. Torn apart by love.
2000s: Two sisters. Bound by blood. Torn apart by love.
Two sisters, Puja and Sharda, two lives which are shattered with both love and betrayal. Sisters who made a promise to each other growing up that they would always be there for each other and would always love each other the best. Sharda is the more academic of the two and loves to learn new things whilst Puja is more happy go lucky and more of a free spirit. But this promise is broken and when years later, following years of silence, Sharda phones her sister asking for help. What caused the rift and can things ever be the same again?
A story of two sisters, of love and betrayal set against the culture, fragrances and colours of India. A childhood growing up in a country full of vibrancy and excitment. A bond between sisters and a dreamlike visit to India with the sights, sounds and fragrances evoked on each and every page.
The doctor’s voice tries for assurance. It brings to mind the deep indigo of a summer’s night settling over golden fields.’
‘Ma’s voice is the colour of tamarind gleaming in the morning sunshine.’
The vibrancy of the setting and the culture is in harsh contrast to the complicated and broken relationships between the sisters. The bond between sisters, the love and inner circle of an Indian family life. As Puja and her son make the journey to India to meet Sharda, their relationship is also in transit. Seeing the country through his eyes, the country is one of contrasts and contradictions. Fascinating to see it for the first time.
The descriptions of cooking – the aromas, the role of food in the family home is all so evocative that if you like your fingers as you turn the page, you may even be able to taste it.
The sisters bond and the break is a story told by two very different sisters, their voices and personalities coming through school reports.
