I think I have admitted before that I find novels about Greek Mythology often very offputting. I always hestitate when reading them and often don’t even pick them up. I;ve read a few recently however and found that if you pick the right one, the right author, then you gain access to a wonderfully hidden world of fables, fiction and more.
I loved Ariadne and so was looking forward to this one. Still hestitant however as I hadn’t heard of the story of Elektra but that was soon to change. I met Elektra, Clytemnestra, and Cassandra and got to know them pretty well. I became embroiled in their concerns and the war raging around them and felt honoured that I could get so close to them. Each of them had such a distinctive voice and were so cleverly written that I could pratically see them. As their stories intertwinned, the novel grew like Greek snakes weaving and merging together capturing the characters and the reader in a trap.

The writing was sublime and it was a pleasure to read. Like molten words creating a picture on the page. This author has a real talent and the writing and tone as well as pace were perfectly suited to the story playing out.
The whole novel was wonderful but there were two images that really stood out for me. One was how the war really impacted on the characters in the book and this was particularly poignant given the sad state of affairs in today’s world. In complete congtrast to that, the section about the wedding was particularly memorable to me. The lead up to the wedding and the wedding itself was ….oooh just nerve-wracking and the atmosphere in the book was sizzling at that point.
Highly recommended as you really feel completely immersed inside Ancient Greece. Imagery, landscape, history and culture are just wonderful.
