Mol Benade, her brothers Treppie and Pop, and son Lambert live in a government house that is on the brink of collapse with its rotting and decaying interior and exterior. They are white and are new inhabitants of the infamous Triomf neighbourhood.
Triomf is the name of the rather grim suburb of Johannesburg depicted in this novel. It used to be a primarily black neighbourhood until they were removed to make room for whites .
This is the story of the neighbourhood and somethings which happen there are from the darkest recesses of the human mind.

Triomf is not the kind of neighbourhood you would hope to spend any length of time in or even wander into. But this is an infamous place for its symbolizes so much of the apartheid era – whites and blacks against each other and the country doing nothing to stop it -even encouraging it by chucking people out of their home and allowing others to not move it but squat in, with no care and attention to the sense of community of improvement to the place.
Triomf is a very sad place to be. Very disturbing portrayal of one neighbourhood, of one country and of a people who are neglected and abused by a country that should look after them. Not many books written from the viewpoint of the poor whites – and this is so much more interesting because of it. A unique viewpoint.
