1850: No one knows that she is a murderer…
London, 1850. On a freezing winter’s night, a baby is abandoned at the gates of a park only to be saved by a young policeman and taken to the Foundling Hospital.
After suffering years of brutal hardship at the Hospital, Lily is released into the world of Victorian London. But she is hiding a dreadful secret…
When Lily and the policeman meet again, Lily is convinced that he holds the key to her happiness. But might he also be the one to uncover her crime and so condemn her to death?
The main setting of this historical tale is firmly set in London. We do get a story set in a farmhouse in Suffolk and there’s a carriage journey across the moors but the real story is London.
The settings here are sad ones – namely the foundling hospital and the abuse that goes on within. The author mentions that this is fictional but that she was inspired to write it to explore the workings of the hospital and the way children were fostered and then returned to the hospital at aged six which seems particularly cruel nowadays.
Lily is treated awfully at the Foundling Hospital and her reasons for killing…..well that’s for you to decide.
