Oscar is a young English clergyman with a disturbing gambling problem. Lucinda having heard that Oscar is a priest, asks to make a confession. Her sin also appears to be something that he understands – gambling.
These two misfits move to Sydney with dreams of building a kind of Utopia. Together this unlikely pair create and are created by the spectacle of mid-nineteenth century Australia.
Mid nineteenth century Australia is the landscape and time period evoked here with style and panache.
But Oscar’s story starts in Hennacombe in Devon where Oscar lives with his father when his mother dies. Oscar leaves for Oriel College in Oxford when he is older and that’s where he discovers gambling.
His journey to New South Wales is fraught with danger as he goes by boat despite having a phobia of water. It’s on the boat he meets Lucinda and that’s where the real adventure of the book begins.
