2022: Threatening plaques, vigilante killings, a Jewish community in an English town – what’s the link? The clock is ticking to the next murder.
After witnessing a racist incident in a small Hertfordshire town, journalist Shanna Regan uncovers a series of threatening fake commemorative plaques. Each plaque highlights someone’s misdemeanour rather than a good deed.
Delving deeper, Shanna discovers these plaques are linked to vigilante killings spanning several decades, with ties to the local Jewish community.
As her search for the truth becomes personal, Shanna puts her own life in danger. Can she stop the next murder in time?
The Redeemer is a compelling, thought-provoking murder mystery debut, featuring themes of prejudice and racism, identity and heritage, revenge and redemption, and secrets from the past.
Southern Hertfordshire. Hillsbury is a fictional town in southern Hertfordshire. This is where Shanna Regan, my main character, is working on a local magazine. She finds a series of threatening fake commemorative plaques and uncovers a series of vigilante killings linked to the local Jewish community. Hillsbury is on the cusp of suburban London and green belt land – so it’s surrounded by a lot of fields!
1. Whomsoever Lane in Bushey, Herts, is the only genuine place name I’ve used within the fictional town, although the fictional lane doesn’t look exactly like the real one. This is where Shanna finds one of the threatening plaques.
2. St Peter’s Church (and its hall on the High Street) was the inspiration for the church and its location in The Redeemer, on a busy crossroads. It’s opposite the Three Crowns Pub, which is where Wham! spent a lot of time. It’s one of three reasons why The Redeemer is published by Three Crowns Publishing UK. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley went to Bushey Meads school, and met Shirlie there.
3. St George’s Recreational Ground in Bushey – this inspired Hillsbury Park and is where family & friends (and I) have witnessed/experienced some antisemitic incidents involving local teenagers.
4. Bushey Jewish cemetery – this comes up in the book and is one of the biggest Jewish cemeteries in the country.
5. Bushey Heath high street – this is the inspiration for Hillsbury High Street though I took artistic licence with the shops and pretty much everything else!
