2000s: Step into the bowels of the Las Vegas underworld and the Vietnamese who work and live there
2000s: Step into the bowels of the Las Vegas underworld and the Vietnamese who work and live there
Robert, a cop from Oakland is on the search for his Vietnamese ex wife Suzy. She remarried, someone on the other side of the law – a Vietnamese gangster and smuggler by the name of Sonny but now she’s disappeared and Sonny blackmails him into finding her.
Robert heads to Las Vegas and visits its underbelly of seedy bars and even seedier drug dens. He meets some rather colourful characters, and even finds a few allies. What he really finds however is a side to the woman he never really knew. One side that reaches as far back as Saigon. A dangerous secret lurks in the past that may not want to be found.
Las Vegas can have its dark side, its seedy side and the side only those who ‘ work at night’ ever really see. But then this is that side, that drugs den, dank dark alley ways and strange people who walk and rule the Strip. Finding someone in this is like finding a needle in a haystack – from the Casinos, around the backs of the hotels, in the shadows, Robert looks for her everywhere and gets into some very troubling situations.
These are the people who control Las Vegas and its allure. OUtsiders are either encouraged to gamble or sucked in to the life here completely.
The real sadness comes from the story that is Hong’s journey from Vietnam. As her story unfolds, her attempts to flee her own life, her attempt at rescuing herself from her past come to the fore. She is an immigrant in a foreign land and her actions are foreign to many -even in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas here is violent, brutal and in your face. This Las Vegas community looks to either control or destroy all those who dare enter…and for those with haunted pasts, they are unlikely to find salvation here.
