A novel to show the dark side of life
I can’t argue that the setting of this book is what caught my eye. Cape Cod. When you are approaching a British winter, what more could you want than to head to the sunshine?
Well, theres not much sunshine in the book. It is summer however. Cape Cod in August – lovely right? Well, wait until you read what this family is going through and what they have suffered here. Elle and her English husband Peter are now living in his family’s crumbling house with its few cabins beside it. There’s a few relatives staying with them plus a few others staying in the area so they are not totally alone. In addition to that the many mosquitos and bugs that inhabit the area keep things connected to nature.
BookTrail Travel to The Paper Palace
This is a story about Elle’s life and the various members of her very dysfunctional family. Wait until you find out about her mother for example. The story of Elle and who she has become is what leads you down the sorry path of regret that Elle herself has walked and now is taking you with her. This path goes deep and be prepared for one hell of a journey. This is a complicated tapestry of a life lived, regrets formed and relationships tested but then something happens to blow everything else out of the water. It’s a grim read in parts. You really get to know Elle -through the whiplash you get by flitting between the here and now. It’s all there for the analysis but bring tissues, something to hug and a warm, comforting drink.
I had a strange feeing when reading this. As if I had walked in on a private therapy session, or of two people having sex. Someone getting undressed….. I left, closing the door behind me and felt awkward and weird in equal measure.
