A Jew Must Die set in Switzerland – Jacques Chessex

  • Submitted: 9th March 2023

April 1942  – the war is raging but even in rural Switzerland the effects are going to be felt and much more keenly than ever imagined.

A handful of local Nazis lure Arthur Bloch – a Jewish cattle merchant – into a stable and kill him with an iron bar.

This is inspired by a real political murder…

BookTrail Travel to A Jew Must Die

This is very interesting as it’s a novel based on a true story .  Some Nazis in Switzerland kidnap and kill a Jewish man. This takes place in a small Swiss village, far from the reality of the war raging in major cities. Not surprisingly however, the ills of the village are blamed on the Jews and so the gruopf think it’s just that they’ve killed a man. Later on, the victim’s body parts are found in a nearby lake but will justice be done?

Can you imagine what this must have been like? A shocking true story of a country isolated from war but preparing themselves evidently for when Germany invaded them. I learned a lot about Switzerland’s position during the war years and was shocked at the dark stains on the country’s history.

It was a shocking and brutal read and I felt so sad. The author was only a young boy when this happened and he was in the same class as the ring leader’s daughter. Quite a unique insight into this shameful past. It is raw reading and it shows up so much about what war really was and how it affected even those not directly involved.
