From her home in Paris, Lina recalls the story of three women whose lives unfold in the conservative city of Barranquilla in Colombia. Dora, Catalina and Beatriz are victims of a patriarchal system. Whether it be amongst parties at the Country Club or strolls along the promenade in Puerto Colombia, this is a story of sensuality supressed by violence.

What a poetic and classic book! The prose is almost poetic and it is so much more than storytelling as you get a sense of what the women are thinking. It’s not first person but it feels like it. You hear them talking, thinking and generally working out life.

There are three parts to the story and I found this way of constructing the novel as being very apt for the tale which unfolds. Dora, Catalina and Beatriz, all friends of the narrator who we don’t meet until the end. I was humbled, angered, upset and all the other emotions reading this as the women tell of their lives, their relations with men and tell of how society treats them. It’s a story about women and womenhood but it’s more a story of strength and resilience.

Actually, it goes further than this. They talk of the wrongness of what a male dominated society is all about and they are far from accepting of the situation. We see scenes of violence, oppression and years of being held back, but the writing and the women tell us that this is not the end of the story, that this is not their story.

There is quite a lot of darkness in the story ovviously and when we get to the country’s past and the religious aspects of that past, then you can really see how women were judged and held back from society in so many ways.

I honestly found the women positive and engaging, encouraging and hopeful despite the many backgrounds that the author puts in their way. This is an epic read. It showcases world history and Colombia’s place in it. Drill down and these three women are small figures in the scheme of things but their voices are big enough to make them shine.

An impressive read!
