In Such Tremendous Heat in Singapore – Kehinde Fadipe

  • Submitted: 13th July 2023

This novel has two titles so that makes me interested already. The UK title ‘In Such Tremendous Heat’ is my favourite as I think it really adds spice and heat to the reading experience. That cover is just juicy! Orange and lemon with a black woman with ruby red lips under a sunhat.

I was instantly attracted to this fiesty read.

BookTrail Travel to In Such Tremendous Heat

This is a fun, juicy and quirky read!

Three friends are living in Singapore. They are all of Nigerian heritage and as a result have similar yet different stories of cultural differences.  There’s Dara who works as a lawyer. Amaka works in a bank. Lillian used to be a professional pianist but her life is falling apart as is her marriage. Enter Lami, a Nigerian/British lawyer. Wait until you see how HE changes things.

The setting of Singapore is nicely done. It’s always interesting having characters of one culture living in another. The Nigerian link comes through in a very distinct way and makes each character unique, their voices sing, and the whole premise fresh and fun. I worried that their legal jobs would make things a bit boring but oh no! Dara for example has more than a few stories to tell about her job I think!

The relationship between these women is what drives the whole novel. There’s love and friendship, family and friends in there too so mix that with the Nigerian and Singapore flavour and you really have quite the dish. The three friends discuss life and love and what it means to be honest with yourself and others. I wanted to be part of their gang as they felt like good company.

I liked the book as it looked at the various dynamics of female friendship and then a man comes in and well, things change. A good book for book clubs I think as there will be discussions and questions after reading.
