Under the Bridge traces the events surrounding the 1997 murder of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk by eight of her peers, in an account based on six years of research and interviews with the accused that offers insight into the social tensions that provoked the crime and the minds of teenage killers. By the author of The Torn Skirt.
On the evening of Friday November 14, 1997, Reena Virk, 14, was invited to a party by her friend near the Craigflower Bridge, in the city of Saanich, British Columbia.
While at the bridge, the group is said to have drank alcohol and smoked marijuana. The girls started on Virk fairly quickly and she was repeatedly hit, punched, and kicked. They burned her with a cigarette and tried to burn her hair.
Virk managed to walk away, but was followed. Two girls dragged Virk to the other side of the bridge and beat her a second time. She was eventually shoved into the water.
Rumours spread around Shoreline Junior High School. Reena Virk was a student at nearby Colquitz Junior High School.
On November 22, 1997, Virk’s partially clothed body washed ashore at the Gorge Inlet.
