Burnie Gunther is a former Berlin homicide detective, unwilling SS officer, who is now living on the French Riviera. He works at the Grand Hotel du Cap- Ferrat now and is the go to man for everything from travelling tips to anything else.
So when a famous writer by the name of Somerset Maughan asks him to fill the forth seat in a game of bridge, it might be a strange request but one which he accepts. But the writer has another reason for wanting to meet Gunther.
Harold Hennig – a face from the Berlin of 1945 who Bernie hoped to never see again is back and this time he has a target in Maugham. Gunther is caught between the old world and the new when Maugham asks him for help as Henning is blackmailing him.

Somerset Maugham served for a while as a spy with MI6 and he has now found that his past has come back to haunt him. Guy Burgess, a real life and infamous spy was in those pictures worked for MI6, the KGB and for the BBC and then defected to Russia. So the political fall out of such photos not to mention the scandal, is huge.
