It was in Italy that he volunteered for the ambulance service and was wounded and twice decorated. Out of his experiences came A Farewell to Arms.
Hemingway’s description of war is unlike any other you will read, yet the novel is much more than a war novel – it is one of drama, passion and above all, love.
Set during the first world war in Italy this is a classic read which really hasn’t dated and infact could be used as a book about the here and now in a lot of ways. What it really does is to show just how pointless war really is and how the men involved try their best to keep up the camaraderie despite the horrific experiences they go through.
War does strange things to people and shows up the strength of the human spirit – these young men were in hell yet they found the time to have a life too and Hemingway shows them in a good light by drinking and laughing too whilst trying to not get killed or maimed. These experiences of war are certainly not those you would like to have yourself yet the literary experience will be one which you never forget.
