When you have a story with fact and fiction blended together, gruesome history of how women were suspected to be witches and some stellar writing, you know a book is going to be good.

After reading The Maiden, about hangings in Scotland, I was very eager to return to Kate Foster’s writing. It was as if she had a great big cauldron and was dripping in historical facts and fictional spells. So well mixed and concocted that I couldn’t tell where one started and the other ended.

Of course, a novel about witches is going to reveal some gruesome ‘scenes’ and you would do well not to eat during much of this novel. I felt sick at one point, but it’s all so well written and rightly so – some of this did actually happen after all. The three women’s stories came together nicely and I thought each voice and story elevated and enhanced the others. Such a compelling premise and the three stories fitted together nicely. The ending….well, that unexpected and intriguing.
