Olivia is from the island of Guernsey and is visiting her aunt at Wallington Manor. When she has to leave for London, Annie is asked to look after her, and on the train journey a friendship blossoms.

From Cornwall to London and Guernsey
This novel actually opens in Penzance, Cornwall, where the girls get the train to head bac k to London. They are due to arrive in Paddington Station but something prevents them from getting there. Tragedy strikes and life changes for ever.
The island of Guernsey is their home and this is the best location in the book. What it must have been like during the war and how life was. Lots of wonderful descriptions of the landscape and lifestyle.
