Twins, Ada and Evan Brijlal are typical Trinidadian children. Well they eat junk food, fight at school and get up to a fair bit of mischief. But what they don’t know until they are twelve is that they are in fact the result of an experiment – their father is a mad cap scientist who has created them inside his lab, made from his sperm and their mother’s egg but an experiment all the same. He brings them from Jamaica to Trinidad where they grow up. Then they discover that their genetic make up allows them to time travel….
The Island Fiction books are aimed at teenagers and young adults but good for anyone wanting to explore the myths legends and the folklore of the Caribbean islands.
The author is from Trinidad herself and it shows for the language of the children, their habits, things they eat and the way they eat them are very typical of the island. Sun and paradise evoked via the sights, sounds and smells of the islands from the fruits to the mountains which protect the city – the St Ann’s in the North and the Laventille Hills in the east.
