You know when Elizabeth Chadwick puts her name to a book recommendation that you are not going to be disappointed. I love books on historical events and time periods and the war of the Roses is one of the most intriguing I think. The events during this time, the intrigue and battles on and off the war field were some of the most interesting and compelling I think I have ever read about.
So, I was very happy to get a copy of a new series. From the start, I knew this was going to be good and that I was in the hands of a master writer. C F Dunn knows the wars and the characters behind them inside out and that passion comes through loud and clear.
keen to read it. It did not disappoint. CF Dunn clearly knows the War of the Roses inside out, and this is a thoroughly immersive read. I almost felt compelled to read this dressed up in a cone hat and taffeta such was the wonderful and sumptuous characterisation. Despite such keen research, I never felt like this was a history lesson. The story flows and the genius is as you look around the rooms and the castles, the detail comes to life and makes the tapestry even richer.
The author takes two characters – Earl Langton and Isobel Fenton and the conflict between them and makes it her own. It’s not like other books on that era, and all the better for it.
Bring on book two!
