Who lives in a house like this? Literary style
Who lives in a house like this?
August is the month where many people go on holiday but sometimes, it’s not possible and that’s why books are there of course. If you have a book in your hand, you can go wherever you want.
Author homes or places associated with authors are often a great place to visit. Some brilliant places in the UK include Charles Dickens home and museum and of course, the many places associated with Agatha Christie. Oh and then there’s the Brontes.
That is just the classics – what about places associated with authors today? That’s for another post. For now, let’s step back in time……
CHARLES DICKENS
The house where Charles Dickens lived and worked stands at 48 Doughty Street in London, not far from Kings Cross. You get the shivers when you stand beside the very desk he wrote on. The house is decorated in the style of the times when he lived and you can almost hear the voices of Tiny Tim and the Artful Dodger coming from the walls. There is so much heritage here, it’s wonderful.
AGATHA CHRISTIE
There are so many places which appear in her novels but one of the places she called home was the house at Greenway in Devon.
Even the entrance to Greenway is like something from an Agatha Christie novel. Secretive, remote and with more than one path leading to more than one unknown place.
Greenway is the house where Christie would spend her summers. Imagine being in the very place where this great lady spent time with her family. Where she spent time reading or writing her latest mystery.
Oh you would get literary tingles standing anywhere near this place!

BRONTE SISTERS
This has to be one of my favourite places in the world. So many great novels to come from one family. Three women ahead of their time. I have been here so many times and never tire of it. You see their house, where they ate, slept and wrote their famous works. There’s a museum and artefacts and a great shop. It’s the grounds and the village nearby where it’s lovely to wander. Passing the church where they prayed and the cemetery where they are buried (with the exception of Anne who is buried in Scarborough)
