Literary Holiday Week – Around the World

Around the World in 80 Days or Books

August is the busiest month for holidays and getaways. But what if you can’t go in real life? This is me this year so I have decided to create my own holiday excitement by delving into some book memories and picking out some places for us to go together.

Travelling is always a major part of any holiday and I have been on some fun roadtrips and journeys over . Some of  my favourites:

Around the World in 80 Days.

Not surprised this was the inspiration behind The Book Trail – it contains every mode of transport you can imagine. There’s a hot air balloon too. Now, I have never had the nerve to go in one in real life so I live vicariously through this book.

When I was very small, my dad would read this to me over and over. He added bits. We went to places not in the book. We travelled on a magic carpet at one point (he may have merged stories haha) and all the while, he became the characters and the story for me.

Then when I got older, there was a cartoon on the TV that brought all those happy memories back and made new ones.  I swear that feeling that travelling and books are magic has never left me:

If you wish to feel inspired by any kind of travel and reading, this book does it all. Get yourself a globe, a book and you’re anywhere you want to be!

My mum read to me too  – almost every night.  She would read herself to sleep which I still giggle at. Never did find out if those three Billy Goats Gruff got over the bridge. did they? Parents who read to their children are giving them the best present money can’t buy.

If anyone ever thinks that books read when you’re little don’t shape your life and have a very special place in your heart….well… I don’t what to say.

Books matter. Book leave impressions on young minds. Libraries help fuel imaginations and let people dream and hope no matter how much money they have or what their parents do for a living.  Bookshops sell dreams and a sense of belonging and a sense of finding your way in the world. Indie booksellers are priceless and authors word wizards.

That’s the real beauty of literary travel and why this website exists.
