Spanish Thriller

Spanish Thriller

There are so many great books coming out of Spain at the moment. I race through their thrillers as Spanish is quite a fast language and when the action ramps up in a book, I feel I should read at pace!

This book was a very good find if I say so myself. That cover for a start….

The title translates as ‘When the Storm passes’ but just look at that isolation and bleakness in one image. Impressive.

A remote island. A storm that seems to be a prelude of a tragedy to come.

The island in question is Ons. This is a real island just off the coast of Galicia. What a treat to visit here via a book as I have never done that before.

Roberto Lobeira is on the island and he can’t leave. The storm is getting worse and he has no chance of getting to the mainland or even communicating with anyone there.

Something washes up on the island’s shores and what is inside causes the islanders to well, reveal their frustrations and anger as well as resentment which has taken years to build up. I can’t say what that is or what is involves as it gives the game away and I want Spanish readers to read this for themselves. There were plenty of thrills and spills here – Roberto gets a package delivered to his door. Not one you’d want to receive.

It’s then a game of hide and seek trying to outwit the hidden threats, with enough jeopardy for a few episodes of The Traitors.

The location and setting were particularly well done for me. What a place! I really want to go to Ons soon. Maybe not meet any of the characters but go to the island for sure!

What I really liked was the way the book included curses, threats, history and belief systems into the goings on. The Tangaraño is a gigantic rock on top of other rocks that people often go to and crouch underneath. There is a hole that is always filled with water and people use this water for healing purposes. The water and rock are especially believed to help with skin diseases.

This book was a whole lot of fun. Some unbelievable moments but a total escape and lots to love.
