A novel to transport you to the Scottish/Russian art scene

You really should read a novel by Jane Anderson. She is a bit like a potter who takes a bit of clay and moulds into something quite amazing. It feels like you are watching the story being created in front of your eyes. There is detail added, smooth prose and a glossy finish. Here, she takes two intriguing stories. Then she weaves them together to bring to life the achievements of real-life 19th century superstar artist Christina Robertson, doyenne of the Russian royal court.
There are two timelines and in one of them, Anna is researching this artist and its through her that we meet Christina. The complex storylines unfold with ease however – that’s because all of the interest and research from the author merges with clear and flowing writing.
Art in this novel is very key to the plot. Jane uses art as a metaphor for many things and she shows us that the journey art takes us on. There are threads of self-discovery, emotional connections and women’s stories throughout.
And wow – the locations are something else. I was drawn into the Russian art world and all that it brings. The scene setting was vibrant and vivid and made the pages sparkle.
I really enjoyed reading this and felt I learned something too. Highly recommended!
