The Perth Nursery & Beyond tells the fascinating and important story of the Riverside Nursery.
The rich alluvial deposits from the River Tay, combined with its sheltered location, make Perth a place that enjoys rich growing conditions. In the area now covered by Riverside Park, there was a nationally important nursery established in the eighteenth century by James Dickson. This is believed to have formed the initial basis for commercial rose breeding as we know it today.
James Dickson and Perth
James (Jacobus) J. Dickson (1738–1822) was a Scottish nurseryman, plant collector, botanist and mycologist. Between 1785 and 1801 he published his Fasciculus plantarum cryptogamicarum Britanniae, a four-volume work in which he published over 400 species of algae and fungi that occur in the British Isles.
The plant genus Dicksonia is named after him..
