Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries

A magical read at Christmas!

The Folk were of another world, with its own rules and customs—and to a child who always felt ill-suited to her own world, the lure was irresistible.

Magical read set in Hrafnsvik

A magical read of Narnia-like forests

Faeries and folklore

Changelings and wonders

Well that was a brilliant book to read just before Christmas! Wonderfully magical, whimsical and fairylike. There’s lots to love here and I do love a bit of magic and make believe at Christmas time.

Hrafnsvik

Location: Hrafnsvik Arctic Circle

Hrafnsvik is a small village on the island of Ljosland, which is located on the outskirts of the Arctic Circle. The village is cold and snowy

The location is delicious from the start – a small town, a bit like Narnia with all kinds of fairy folk. The landscape is one of dreams and delights that you conjure inside your mind when reading. The words paint a delightful picture of a cosy, fantastical world.

Emily who arrives there to study the secrets of The Hidden Ones has no intention of making friends it would seem. Her rival Wendell does have a charming side however. The real delight is when they get together – banter, rivalry n ‘all! I did like Emily – socially inept at times and a bit blunt but when she and Wendell interact – I wanted to be there!

The magic of the fairy folk and the promise of them gave me all the feels! How I wanted to sit in the garden and imagine such a world really exists! The author has lovingly described and evoked each one, each kind of fairy and it was such a delight getting to know them all! The interaction between them and the humans was interesting and I loved the world building here. Not a huge fan of fantasy normally, but this kind is right up my street!

Can I just pause to give a special mention to Shadow? The perfect animal companion that’s for sure.

Let’s fly above the village of Hrafnsvik now and just  marvel at the wonders below. Loved every minute.

Anyone want to come and live with me in Hrafnsvik with the fairyfolk?
