A novel to transport you to Golden Age Amsterdam

Excellent depiction of Amsterdam during the Golden Age and when Rembrandt was at his peak.
Some of this story is based on the real fact that he had an affair with his maid and promised her marriage only to take it back. What this poor woman goes through at a time when she thought this was her way out, her way forward in life. When you were a widow at this time, life had few options. So, to think you might move on with a painter and a famous one at that would be really promising.
Life in Amsterdam at this time was hard and dirty. The city and time comes to life and it’s honestly fascinating and so well evoked. This is a “behind the scenes” look at one of the most famous painters in the world. The way he worked, his temperament, his world opens up before your eyes. I really need to indulge further now and go to the Rembrandt museum to find out more about the painter and his work.
I love books that take you back in a time machine and allow you to meet real figures from the past. Fascinating and brilliant more so since it’s a debut!
