Mirabelle Bevan may be retired from the Secret Service but she is by no means retired herself. She needs a change in life however now that her lover has died and she finds herself lost and lonely in Brighton. Working in a debt collection agency will certainly be a change.
When the case of Romana Laszlo, a pregnant Hungarian refugee comes into the offices, Mirabelle discovers that her former work could well prove vital. Together with an insurance clerk, Vesta Churchill, they are soon on the trail of gold sovereigns, betting scams and corpses to a dark corner of Austerity Britain where the forces of evil remain alive and well.
1950s Brighton is a new change for Mirabelle Bevan. Now that the war is over, she is retired from her work with the Secret Service and is now firmly settled in Brighton. Well settled as far as a sandwich or two on the beach can be. London has too many memories but the ones she hopes to create in Brighton are not developed yet.
Work in the debt collection agency is not exactly what she planned to do however but the case of Romana Laszlo, a pregnant Hungarian refugee who has apparently come to Brighton to give birth and who also owes someone money.
Work however in this building is like a microcosm of life – Vesta Churchill is black and her friendship with Mirabelle soon starts to reveal the racism both inherent and hidden in 50s Britain. This is also a world where rationing is still the order of the day, where the fashion is what we call retro today and where the essence of the fifties from the smoking to the social mores is all around.
