1990s: The underworld of Bergen just got a little darker…
Varg Veum’s world is a cold dark place at the best of times but in his latest case he becomes aware of a case which takes him deep into the heart of a world of drugs and prostitution and the privileged, young teenage girls who have been drawn into this in various dubious ways.
Just when he thinks the situation couldn’t really get any worse, a local judge is discovered dead in a luxury hotel, dressed in women’s lingerie. Varg starts to investigate a missing girl and will try to find out how and why the judge ended up the way he did.
This is not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.
The hotel industry will not appreciate the hotels and crimes in them alluded to in this novel so just as well none are mentioned by name. Someone high up and prominent in the legal world is found here dead.
A few yards away from this plus hotel is another world again. Whilst the missing girl was found in a well known amusement park in the city centre, the press pack are hunting in the main square’s favourite pub. Central location to head out quick to the scene of interest. And there are many in this novel.
Take Toadsmarsh for example – formerly known as this but now known as Mannsverk. The people who live there have never like hearing the district called by its original name of Toadsmarsh. Not suprising really.
What’s in a name? Varg Veum means lone wolf, persona non grata or ‘ unwelcome guest’ so make of that what you will.
Normal places appear in this novel – hotels, amusement parks and the legal profession but scratch the surface and all kinds of goo starts to emerge.
Don’t stay in a hotel that Varg Veum knows about…
