Being the new kid in school is never easy but what is you’ve moved from Korea to the US and no one can pronounce your name?
Unhei is the new kid in school. It’s never easy being the new girl but Unhei has come to AMerica from Korea with her parents and so she’s lost and feels confused when no one seems able to say her name
So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by “no-name girl” and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from.
But then the jar will give everyone a surprise.
Korea and America
Two very different countries and cultures not to mention languages so to move from one to the other must be hard. Imagine that you’re a child starting school and being prodded and poked by your classmates who think you’re there for show and tell and can’t pronounce your name. The idea of a name jar is nice but what happens to the Name Jar is even nicer
This is a good book to talk about cultural assimilation to a child and to start talking about how people are different but that essentially we’re all the same.
