What you need to know before your trail

The product of five years of investigative reporting, the subject of intense national controversy, and the source of death threats that forced the National Human Rights Commission to assign two full-time bodyguards to Anabel Hernández, Narcoland is the book to read to discover more about the reality of what narcotics and the war on drugs is really about.

This book looks at the why and how Mexico became a base for the mega- cartels of Latin America and one of the most violent places on the planet.

The note by Roberto Saviano at the start of the story says that Narcoland is essential for understanding the power dynamics inside the Mexican economy and the economy’s deep and often concealed links with politics.

Travel Guide

The world of Narcoland is certainly a world that few of us will know much about apart from what we see on the news and only then in passing. this is the account of that world from the inside.

The story begins on the way to Guadelupe y Calvo  –  a small storm prone municipality in the northern state called Chihuahua Mexico and takes us on a journey of multiple locations in the drug regions of Mexico  – into the drug heartland as it were

From Baborigame  – places where the drug crops are apparently grown by 80% of the population there and to Dolores, El Saucito de Araujo and Mesa del Frijol where the situation is largely the same.

Ana herself sits at the top of Mohinora, a mountain in the south of the Tarahumara range and the highest peak in Chihuahua – she notes the beauty of the place yet its where she can see the destruction of drugs below.

As a journalist it was the fate of  El Chapo Guzman and his story who she is looking into. This player in the Mexican drug scene had apparently escaped from the Puente grande Prison in the state of Jalisco  in a laundry basket. But there are many more players in this sad game and Ana looks into everything.

This is a raw and shocking account of inside Mexico’s underbelly.
