2000s: A timeless story about love, hope and the bond of friendship between a boy and a lion
Bertie rescues an orphaned white lion cub from the African veld. They are inseparable until Bertie is sent to boarding school far away in England and the lion is sold to a circus. Bertie swears that one day they will see one another again, but it is the butterfly lion which ensures that their friendship will never be forgotten.
A boy and a lion are separated and when the boy is sent to England to leafy Wiltshire and is bullied at school. His story goes back and forth to England and Africa when the lion is sold and then later when Bertie ends up in France during the war…
The author mentions that he was inspired by a carving on a horse on a hill as he went by on a train in Westbury. We also think that the famous white horse in Oxfordshire would be a nice place to imagine the inspiration
Nearby is the famous Longleat Safari park where you can see many lions and maybe one of them is related to the butterfly lion.
