Harvey Keill is the ex-manager of the Ladykillers, a famous punk band back in the day. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since their turbulent time together but the memories and bad feeling come flooding back as the group reconnect.
Harvey has invited them all to an island retreat just off the coast of Seattle. As each member arrives, tempers fray and regrets come spilling out. They realise what could have been and what has happened since. But it’s what is about to happen that no one can even imagine..

Even the name of that place doesn’t bode well. Each member of the band comes to the island one by one. A remote place but once with band music heritage.
“Shark Island has been the subject of much speculation of late, Insider sources suggest that either Madonna or Bono recently purchased the exclusive retreat, though spokesmen for those artists deny the claims”
So, even the island has a past it would seem. And then the musicians themselves arrive, one by one as if lambs to the slaughter. Their background is revealed slowly as are the reasons for each of them being there.
Host Max is no where to be seen but as the dynamics of the band change, the island becomes their prison, and others have been employed to work there for the summer.
The sharks are definitely circling and the most dangerous ones are not in the water..

I was in two minds about this book but was curious to read it as it was billed as a modern day retelling of the Agatha Christie classic ‘ And then there were none. Now I should say that of course the original can’t be beaten. Not at all in my opinion but this was a brave attempt to mimic the same sense of claustrophobia and sheer isolation and fear of a group of musicians in the present day.
The fact is that this premise seemed all the more plausible in the present day as the news is full of warring musicians, and reunions gone bad, not to mention managers and blistering past resentment.
I think it would be best not to read the original before reading this as well, the fun is in guessing who is the killer. This was an interesting read on its own but having read the original, I just didn’t feel the same tension and foreboding as I maybe should have. Can I say the deaths were less ‘imaginative’? ( Death one in particular) The lyrics of the song instead of the nursery rhyme foreboding death was a nice touch.
I did like the ghostly reawakening of the punk rock era but I think this is a book to read if you’ve not read the Christie version.
