Marty Preston lives in the hills of Friendly, West Virginia. He comes across an abused beagle owned by his brutal neighbour Judd Travers, and instead of leaving him alone and ‘ minding his own business’ like he would be expected to do, he decides instead to steal and hide the dog.
He calls him Shiloh and starts concocting a series of lies in order to protect the dog.But Judd is not finished with him yet..
The novel is set in the small town of Friendly, West Virginia
Marty names him Shiloh, a tribute to a neighborhood schoolhouse. He takes care for the dog and when he hides him he builds a wire pen in the nearby woods. He smuggles dinner out to him and even persuades his mother to keep his secret.
The town with the name of Friendly is anything but for Marty but the love of a dog starts to change everyone and everything.
