Early 1900s: Alberta and its wilderness is as much as the story as Mary Boulton herself. Spooky and chilling.

1903 – Mary Boulton, 19, is newly widowed, a result of having murdered her husband. Her twin brothers-in-law are bent on avenging their dead sibling.
“It was night, and the dogs came through the trees, unleashed and howling.”
She is pursued not only by the vengeful twins but also by visions. Mary was raised in a genteel household but married a brute; now, having divested herself of her husband, she is not altogether sane. From an early benefactress she steals a horse, and together they navigate a gothic, ghostly mountain pass, unlikely to improve Mary’s mental state. Desperate, freezing, and alone, Mary is now an outlander, as are most of the characters she encounters
Oh those trees and shadows of the Banff wilderness……not a great place to be at night, and if you’re being chased by two men who are set out to get revenge, you’d better make sure you run fast. Unknown and unfamiliar territory together with a rapid plot adds to the overall atmosphere and although can be quite graphic in places, making you stumble as you read, the pauses are necessary for what comes after.
The Rockies might sound stunning to most but look behind the reality and the harshness of trying to survive out here when the world it seems is against you and its not stunning at all. The inclusion of the devastating landslide which occurred in 1902-03, and which was the worst in mining history was a unique and interesting addition to the overall sense of place and time.
