What you need to know before your trail

The story of Thom Wiens, a young Mennonite man struggling to make sense of his faith in a changing world

The story is set in the rural town of Wapiti, Saskatchewan, during WWII. The mennonites are supposed to live non-violently but this is sadly not always the case.

They oppose war and military service, so they are hardly affected by the war – except for the fact that they are reaping the rewards of selling their increasingly valuable crops and livestock…..

Travel Guide

Swift Current or Wapiti?

Just because Wapiti is fictional, don’t let this make you feel as if the book is anything other than a true account of life in a changing world since the struggles and feelings will be familiar to many. Fictional Wapiti in Northern Saskatchewan could be modelled on a mennonite town such as Waldheim? There is also a Mennonite village to visit at mennoniteheritagevillage

The world portrayed here is a religious one and Thom Wiens, as with many other of his faith are finding it difficult to remain true to his faith in a ever changing world. Even if you know nothing of mennonism and religion, there is a clear message of how one believer tries to make sense of the world around him. They share different views of christianity than most and are sometimes hounded and stalked because of it. The tension between ‘ them and us’ is the backdrop but the views and words of Thom himself goes towards  helping the reader to see things he would not normally.

There must be many people from all kinds of religious backgrounds who will see themselves in this book.
