Faced with a job-related ten-month separation, married couple Jocelyn and Charles (Jock and Chas) choose to maintain contact through letters–this is how we see the changes which occur in the marriage and in each of the couple.
When Jock, the breadwinner moves far away from their family home, Jock finds that ‘being alone’ even if for a short time brings up both advantages and disadvantages. Similarly for Chas who doesn’t have a job, he finds himself the sole guardian of two teenagers

With all of the dialogue and information being presented via letters it is away of actually reading their thoughts. This brings with it a level of involvement which helps with experiencing if not always understanding either of the couple involved.
Inside a claustrophobic marriage despite the fact the couple are apart, is a difficult one to be and the setting is more of a factor of distance which could take place anywhere.
A universal setting with issues that unite or divide so many. With one living in Vancouver and the other in Ottawa, distance obviously is going to be a problem but then a lack of communication can occur no matter where you are.
