What you need to know before your trail

Based on a true story, Dancing in a Jar elaborates on the real-life love affair of Don Poynter and his wife as they travel to St Lawrence, an outport community in Newfoundland from their home in New York. The Depression is in full flow and life is difficult. But Don has a management position in the new town’s Fluorspar mine.

The couple writes letters detailing their new lives in the town and talk about their work at a very significant time of their lives and of Canada’s story itself. A small mining town in Newfoundland is but a small mirror on the Canadian mindset and shows the love two people can have for a special part of the Canadian landscape.

Travel Guide

Newfoundland and Labrador

The author explains that one of the reasons she had for wiring this book was for her children to get to know their grandfather at a very special time in Newfoundland history. This is also a story about the St Lawrence mines

This is the story of St Lawrence and how the author came across letter from her father and her mother. Her mother had gone to St Lawrence against the will of her family and found it “An impoverished, isolated place” and wanted to return to the US. But letters paint a picture of their live and their situation not to mention the landscape:

“Their description of the place is a love story onto itself”

“ As I write, it is glorious out, seas are calm, and the coast of Nova Scotia is on our port. Even from here I can see the leaves have started to change, and to be sure, the air has a cool nip”
