1976: The inviting waters of the Lake District hide many dark secrets within…
The summer of 1976 was unprecedented. The sunshine was fierce and the heat lasted for days, weeks months. Everyone was afraid tomorrow would be the last day of this magnificent summer.
Not surprisingly therefore was the popularity of the Lake District. Swimmers often spend time here, those dipping their toes or just taking in the scenery. but what no one sees is what is lurking beneath those cool still waters. For this is where the sun never shines, where the waters are almost at freezing level, and where if someone were to get caught, they would surely die.
A awful side to paradise or a perfect spot for murder?
Cumbria’s mountains and valleys are not as luscious green as they usually are. They more than resemble a Grecian landscape, covered in dust and…..frozen in time.
Look out at a lake and watch the still waters, then imagine the unusual phenomenon of their being a small portion of water barely three feet from the surface where the water almost freezes you to death.
Danger and death so close to the happy sunny days swimming in England’s largest national Park. If people are dying anyway, who’s going to suspect one more as being anything else but an accident?
Just be careful who you go sailing with in the Lake District….
