The travels of Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago are a passionate rediscovery of his own land.
The travels of Nobel Laureate Jose Saramago are a passionate rediscovery of his own land.
From the misty mountains of the north to the southern seascape of the Algarve, Jose Saramago wants to rediscover the country of his birth.
Setting off in his rather old motor car, Saramago wants to travel to Portugal, as well as through it, to how it’s changed over the years and how it’s preparing for the modern times. He is not your typical guide however as there are no tourist sites here, but rather the off the beaten track places you might never see otherwise.
They say you don’t see a mountain unless you’re standing far away from it, and so this is the way the author starts his journey – by getting far away from Portugal, heading into Spain and then turning around and heading back so Portugal comes to him.
He starts a long and ambitious journey from the north to the south and visits many churches, to many of which to mark here but there is an exhaustive list inside the book. Be prepared for a long journey through Portugal’s history and culture.
