2000s: The world of horse racing is a brutal one where no one really wins the ultimate race
The world of horse racing is a world the author knows all too well. And it’s often a brutal cut throat one.
Blacksmiths, jockeys. trainers, veterinarians and the horse themselves. Just some of the players in this world where every pound of horse flesh counts and costs.
Director of Racing, Al McTavish tries to keep his business together and his horses in the winning stakes. but everyone in this world has their own agenda.
There is no real winner in this race, but it’s the getting there that’s the major challenge.
Horse Flesh is as brutal as it sounds. Each pound of flesh is measured and judged for their winning potential. Each horse quite literarallya piece of meat. And there are extremes to ensure that your horse is the winning one.
The health and condition of the animals is secondary and sometimes not important at all. There are practices which shockingly the author is keen to point out actually do take place. Owners will do what it takes to get their horse out in front and if that means mixing substances into their feed then so be it.
