The story of Fort Mose
The story of Fort Mose
Fort Mose was founded in St. Augustine, Florida, and was the first free African settlement to legally exist in what later became the United States. Fort Mose was the first free black settlement and also
the southern link of the Underground Railroad as a haven of refuge.
Fort Mose Historic State Park is located two miles north of St. Augustine, Florida, on the edge of a salt marsh
It used to be known as Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mosé. The original site of the fort was uncovered in a 1986 archeological dig. It’s now the premier site on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.
The history of this place is very significant – In 1738, the Spanish governor of Florida, Manuel de Montiano, had Fort Mose built and established as a free black settlement, the first to be legally sanctioned in what would become part of the United States.
