Everyone knows that Australia is big but when you read that it’s either the biggest island in the world or the smallest continent then it really puts it into perspective. It’s almost the size of the USA if you take away Alaska and when the book was written there were some 21 million people even then!
The map at the start of the book shows the size and scope of the country/continent and the various oceans which laps its many sides.
The journey starts from Botany Bay, the very place where Captain Cook landed all those years ago. Following in the footsteps of history, this is a fascinating walk.
From the skyscrapers such as Australia SQuare tower to the school uniforms of the time, the pictures and words capture the essence of the country with interesting snippets thrown in. Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Sydney Opera house are viewed in a new light as is the landscape of the outback.
Watch out for the little man escaping via kangaroo express at the end.
