Lane Roanoke is fifteen when she comes to live with her maternal grandparents and fireball cousin, Allegra, at the Roanoke family’s rural estate following the suicide of her mother. Over one long, hot summer, Lane experiences the benefits of being one of the rich and beautiful Roanoke girls. But what she doesn’t know is being a Roanoke girl carries a terrible legacy: either the girls run, or they die. For there is darkness at the heart of Roanoke, and when Lane discovers its insidious pull, she must make her choice…
Just as well this family estate is not real as you’d want to ensure it was fully burnt down to the ground if it really had existed. Those who live here and in the surrounding Osage county are part of a rural community who live life unlike the rest of the world. One girl ran away but then returns to help one of her own, only to find out the true depravity of what went on in that house all those years ago. Like a ripple in a pond, one stone or several stones break the water but the consequences ripple outwards for years even when the centre of the pond seems calm and peaceful.
Don’t expect to read this and love the landscape – it might be hot, desert like and very different to the big city where Lane, the returning character has come from, but this is what your worst nightmare looks like in landscape form.Remote, dry and impossible to escape.
